Peek-Through-the-Pines Card
On the eve of Labor Day, Sunday, September 6, 1970, a nurse named Donna Lass employed at the Sahara Hotel, South Lake Tahoe, disappeared never to be heard from again. Just over 6 months later, a mysterious card made from an ad of an apartment complex located on the other side of the lake, was sent to Paul Avery of The San Francisco Chronicle.

Peek-Through-the Pines
The card contains clues with suspected ties to Donna Lass's disappearance. The clues include an advertisement from a complex in Incline Village along with clues of the Pines, and the "Sierra Club" which was/is a nature conservation organization. In 1986, a human skull was found within the vicinity of the remote area northwest of Lake Tahoe. In 2023, these remains found in Placer County was positively identified as Donna Lass.
The front of the post-card
Oddly, the originator of card included cut-outs of his favorite chosen newspapers. Addresses were missing, yet the attention went to Paul Avery of the Chronicle. Many have debated whether his name was intentionally misspelled.
